Jon Carroll (b. 1943) was a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle from 1982 until his retirement in 2015.  He still writes in his own blog, Jon Carroll Prose.  His style is both fun to read and very quotable — this is the second of three Carroll quotations in my collection.
The Chronicle maintains an archive of Jon Carroll columns, but sadly they are behind the paywall.
